Your college planning checklist

Treat this as a flexible guide, not a race. Students’ paths differ; confirm requirements and deadlines with each school and the relevant official organization.

Every year

  • Keep a current record of courses, grades, activities, leadership, work, service, awards, and responsibilities.
  • Choose commitments for their meaning and learning; do not invent or exaggerate accomplishments.
  • Revisit goals with the student and family as interests, circumstances, and priorities change.
  • Discuss affordability early and use official college and financial-aid information when comparing costs.
  • Protect time for health, family, rest, and interests beyond the application process.

Freshman year

  • Learn graduation requirements and build steady study routines.
  • Choose courses that are appropriately challenging and sustainable.
  • Try activities that genuinely interest you; notice what you want to continue.
  • Keep a simple record of projects, responsibilities, honors, and meaningful experiences.
  • For athletes, learn the relevant sport’s recruiting landscape without rushing into commitments.

Sophomore year

  • Review grades, course choices, and interests with a trusted school counselor.
  • Deepen involvement in a few meaningful activities rather than adding commitments only for appearance.
  • Explore possible fields of study, careers, summer learning, or community opportunities.
  • Begin discussing college size, location, campus environment, and family budget.
  • Student-athletes: organize an accurate athletic and academic profile and confirm current recruiting guidance with official sources.

Junior year

  • Check graduation requirements, course rigor, and academic progress with your counselor.
  • Make a testing plan based on current college policies and your student’s needs.
  • Research colleges using academic fit, interests, environment, location, and affordability—not rankings alone.
  • Track campus visits, information sessions, application requirements, and scholarship opportunities.
  • Draft a truthful activities résumé and keep a calendar of important deadlines.
  • Student-athletes: identify appropriate programs, prepare an authentic profile, and organize respectful coach outreach and follow-up.

Senior year

  • Confirm each college’s current application, testing, financial-aid, and scholarship requirements.
  • Build a balanced list that reflects academic, personal, and financial fit.
  • Create a calendar for applications, recommendations, essays, forms, and financial-aid steps.
  • Write application materials in the student’s own voice and verify every detail for accuracy.
  • Submit before deadlines, confirm receipt, and save copies of submitted materials.
  • Compare final offers and costs with family priorities before making a decision.
  • Student-athletes: verify recruiting, eligibility, and roster details directly with the college and relevant governing body.
