Student-Athlete Recruiting Profile Checklist

Build a clear, accurate working profile before you reach out to college coaches. Use the checklist on this page to organize the academic, athletic, and personal-fit details that are yours to share.

For student-athletes and familiesUse only student-verified informationPrint from your browser when useful

Before you begin

Treat this as a private draft. Record only what you can verify, add context where a number or link could be misunderstood, and leave a field blank if it does not apply. A parent or guardian can help review information and decide what contact details are appropriate to share. Keep the student’s voice and choices at the center.

Student details

Identify the student and graduation year

Use a current name and school information. Contact details belong in a private working copy; share only the channels a coach needs to reach the student.

Student name for coach communication

Expected high-school graduation year

High school and city / state

Student email or preferred contact channel (if appropriate to share)

  • My name, school, and graduation year are current and accurate.
  • The contact channel I plan to share is one I check and am comfortable using with a coach.
  • A parent or guardian has reviewed what contact information is appropriate to share.
  • I have left out my home address, personal account details, and other private information that a coach does not need.

Academic context

Make school information easy to understand

Academic details should be current, accurate, and labeled so a reader can understand the scale and context. Do not estimate or convert school-reported figures.

High school name and location

Current GPA, scale, weighted / unweighted, and date reported

Current courses and level (for example, honors or AP if applicable)

Academic interests or possible areas of study (optional)

Testing status, only if applicable: test, date, score, and context

Other academic detail a coach has asked for, if verified

  • I checked GPA and course details against a current school record or with a school counselor.
  • I included the GPA scale and whether it is weighted or unweighted when I share a GPA.
  • I have included testing information only if it applies and I choose to share it; otherwise I can leave it blank.
  • I have not described an interest or course as a credential, award, or completed result if it is still in progress.

Athletic profile

Describe the sport with verified detail

A coach should be able to see what you play, where you play, and how to interpret your results. Use a source and date for marks that may change or need context.

Sport

Position, event, or role

Current school team and season

Club / travel / other team, if applicable

Coach name and contact (include only with the coach’s permission)

Schedule or event information to share, with dates

Verified stats or marks: result, units, date / season, and source

Relevant competition history: event, date, result, and source / context

  • Every statistic, time, measurement, ranking, and result can be checked against its source.
  • I have included units, event or season, date, and useful context so a result is not misleading.
  • I can distinguish my individual result from a team result and have not presented one as the other.
  • I have permission before listing a school or club coach’s contact details as a reference or point of contact.

Video and evidence

Give film and highlights useful context

A link is only useful when it works and a coach can tell what they are watching. Keep footage representative and accurately labeled.

Film / highlight link and access setting

Date recorded and season / event shown

My role, number, position, or event identifier in the footage

For an edit: timestamps and what the coach should notice

Full-game / full-event link, if available and relevant

Last date I tested the links and viewing permissions

  • The footage is dated and labeled with the event or season and my role in it.
  • Any edited highlights identify the relevant plays or moments, and the edit does not distort what happened.
  • The link opens for the intended viewer, and I have permission to share the video.
  • I have checked whether the footage clearly identifies me and included context where it may not.

Whole-college fit

Name the priorities that matter to you

Recruiting is part of a larger college decision. Record what you are looking for academically, athletically, personally, and financially so each program can be considered in context.

Academic interests, learning environment, or support needs

Athletic priorities: event / position, development, role, or team environment

Campus, location, size, and community preferences

Family’s financial considerations and questions to research

What I would like to learn from a coach or program

My current priorities, in order (optional)

  • I can explain why a school could fit me academically and personally, beyond its athletic reputation.
  • I have written down athletic questions without assuming a roster role, scholarship, or opportunity.
  • I know which financial and academic details need to be confirmed with the college and my family.

Before outreach

Check that the profile is ready to share

Outreach works best when it is accurate, specific to the program, and led by the student. Use Northstar’s coach-outreach guide for help preparing a personal message and follow-up.

  • I researched the college and program and can name a real academic, athletic, or campus reason for my interest.
  • I confirmed I have the correct coach and contact route for this sport and program.
  • I reviewed current guidance and any coach or program instructions that apply to my communication before sending.
  • I can explain every academic figure, stat, mark, competition result, and video link in my profile.
  • The message uses my own words, is written to the specific coach, and includes only information I can verify.
  • A parent, guardian, or coach has reviewed facts and safety as appropriate, while the student remains in the lead.
  • I know what relevant next step I will take and how I will record any reply.

Follow-through

Keep a private follow-up log and next step

Use this log for programs you have researched. Keep notes factual and private, follow a coach’s instructions, and avoid repeated messages without a relevant reason to reconnect.

My next-step check

  • I will recheck the facts, dates, source context, and video links before sharing an update.
  • I have chosen one clear next step and know who can help me with it.
  • A parent or guardian knows what information I plan to share and with whom.
  • I will update this private working profile when accurate new information becomes available.

Truth and student ownership: The student should verify profile details and ensure that every message, video, application, and representation is truthful and authentic. Do not guess, inflate, or claim a result, affiliation, credential, or experience that is not accurate.
